Tong Leung-tak

    
A renowned Chinese erhu performer, Tong Leung-tak began his career in music when he joined the Central Xinying Orchestra in 1956, having been at various times the Orchestra's principal player, concertmaster and acting conductor.


As a composer and music educationist, Tong has written music scores for drama and films, solo pieces for erhu and Chinese music ensemble works, and is the co-acthor of Erhu Playing Techniques. He joined the Hong Kong Government as a Senior Music Officer in 1978, and since 1995 has been a Senior Music Officer in the Music Office. He is a part-time erhu guest instructor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

During his twenty-years' music career in Hong Kong, Tong has been activity engaged in the outreach activities in schools and communities, helping young people in their performances, conducting and training up young instrumentalists. He has also taken the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra on many touring performances in Europe North America and Southeast Asia. He was awarded Artistic Educationist of the Year by the Hong Kong Artists' Guild in 1991.

He is at present n executive member of the Chinese Ethnic Orchestra Music Society and the Chinese Musicians' Association; Honorary Adviser to a number of instrumental research societies; executive committee member of the Amateur Folk Instrument Music Playing Examination Board (Hong Kong District) under the Chinese Ethnic Orchestra Music Society; and Honorary Adviser to the Hong Kong Wang Guang Chinese Orchestra , Hong Kong Chinese Music Troupe and Hong Kong Juvenile and Youth Chinese Classical Orchestra.
