Kwok Hang-kei a native of Swatow, Guangdong Province, was born
in Shanghai and studied music since childhood. In the 1950s, he
studied piano, accordion, composition, conducting and music
theory under Russian and Chinese musicians. He worked with
Shanghai Chorus and Yunnan Province Song and Dance Troupe,
and taught in Yunnan Arts Institute and Kunming Teachers' College.

On many occasions, he toured with art troupes to Singapore, Thailand,
Burma, Laos and Hong Kong. He is well versed in the music of the
minorities in Southwestern China. He has written nearly a hundred
well-received and well-known works in traditional Chinese style.
After coming to Hong Kong, he has devoted himself to teaching and composing music. He received various commissions from the Music
Office, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and the Hong Kong Chorus
to write music, including 'Torch Festival', 'Secretary in Dali', 'Ah Li Li'
and 'Lantern Festival', He composed the music for the full-length
dance production 'Live Drawings in Yunnan' presented by the Hong
Kong Dance Company. He has also written incidental music for movies,
and was adjudicator for the Chinese composition section of the Hong
Kong Young Music Makers Talent Quest.
He is a member of the Association of Chinese Musicians, Composers and
Authors Society of Hongkong and Hongkong Composers' Guild. He was
the conductor in two major concerts featuring erhu master Xiang Zuying
and dizi virtuoso Yu Xunfa respectively. In recent years, he has been invited
many times to conduct concerts in Taiwan.
