When Chan Wai-kin was in Form one, he started learning yangqin under NG Chiu-shing in his school's Chinese music training classes and often performed in campus and outside school. He joined the Hong Kong Juvenile and Youth Chinese Classical Orchestra as a yangqin player in 1991 and performed in Xiamen, Kunming and Vienna with the Orchestra in late 1992, early 1994 and mid-1994 respectively. He led his school's Chinese Orchestra and won the second prize in the Orchestra Section (Chinese Instruments) of the Hong Kong School Music Festival in 1992 and 1993. He himself won the second prize in the Advanced Group (Yangqin) at the 46th Hong Kong School Music Festival.

In 1995, he learned dizi with LI Yao-zhang. In mid-1996, he joined in Hong Kong Juvenile and Youth Chinese Classical Orchestra as a dizi player. He is currently the Chairmen and dizi principal of the Orchestra.
