 Introduction of Hong Kong Juvenile and Youth Chinese Classical Orchestra

Founded in 1990 by Ng Chiu-shing, Chan Yat-ping, Lai Siu-ming and Wong Yiu-ting the Hong Kong Juvenile and Youth Chinese Classical Orchestra aims at developing Chinese culture, promoting Chinese music activities and nurturing a new generation of Chinese musicians . Member of the Orchestra are mainly young Chinese music lovers, a majority of whom have received rigorous music training since primary school, which has rendered are them a solid foundation , a high standard of virtuosity and rich experience in performance. More than half of its members have won prizes in School Music Festival. Currently, some who wish to pursue a career in music have joined the Hong Kong Academy for Performance Arts for professional studies, while those interested in a career as music educators have become instrument instructors to train up young talents.

In a span of some ten years since its inception, The Orchestra has performed in more than a hundred concerts to high acclaim. It has been deemed a local youth Chinese orchestra with very high potential. Apart from staging concerts on a regular basis at the Hong Kong Cultural Center and various town halls, the Orchestra also give demonstration performances in primary and secondary schools with a view to promoting Chinese music. Performances are also given in district arts festivals . The Orchestra has indeed made remarkable contributions to the promotion of local Chinese music.

Over the years, the Orchestra has invited musicians and groups to perform in Hong Kong. In August 1992, pipa virtuoso and educator Li Kunli from mainland China was invited to give a pipa recital. In January 1996, the Youth Chinese Orchestra affiliated to the Taipei Chinese Orchestra was invited, with more than sixty members on tour, to perform in an exchange concert. In August 1996, the Kunming Youth Palace Qianchun Folk Orchestra was invited, with forty members on tour, to perform in an exchange programme. In January 1998, the Xiamen Experimental Juvenile Pipa Ensemble was invited to perform in collaboration with the Orchestra at the Hong Kong Cultural Center.In January 1999, the Peking Golden-sail Chinese Orchestra was invited to give interflow concert. The Orchestra has put great efforts in fostering musical and cultural exchange between mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The Orchestra has also planned a series of oversea performance. In December 1992, the Orchestra was invited by the Xiamen Branch on the CYTS Tour Corporation to give two concerts in Xiamen. In mid-February 1994, on the invitation of Yunnan Art Center, the Orchestra gave three concerts in Kunming. In July of the same year, the Orchestra was invited to Vienna for three performances. The visit was the first one made by an amateur Chinese Orchestra visited from Hong Kong to the caption of music for promotion of Chinese music culture. In April 1996, the Orchestra performed in the "Taipei Traditional Art Season" in Taiwan on the invitation of the Taipei Chinese Orchestra. In july 1999, the Orchestra was invited to give performance in Peking Concert Hall by the Peking Thirty-fifth Secondary School. In July 2000, the Orchestra was invited to Los Angeles and Las Vegas for performances.

The repertoire of the Orchestra covers a wide spectrum from traditional Chinese music to newly composed and arranged works. Since its inception, the Orchestra has performed more than seventy such work. While retaining the tradition quintessence of Chinese music, the Orchestra continues to explore new directions and develop new horizons in Chinese music.
